Cycling has become a very popular past-time and something that a lot of tourists choose as a great option for getting around and seeing parts of Majorca that they wouldn’t see so easily otherwise. Majorca has a road network of 1,250 kilometres as well as many more paths and tracks which a bike can access that a car can’t easily. There are even Professional cyclists who visit Majorca and take part in some of the competitions held here like the Sa Trencagarrons which is the cycling climb to the highest point on the island.
In and around Alcudia there is excellent cycling terrain, the hills aren’t too far away, and the coast road that runs east to playa de muro, ca’n picafort and beyond is generally flat and makes for easy cycling with excellent views and a lot to see. Just sticking to the road network in the area, you will be taken on tours through mountains and close to beaches. Alcudia is in fact the main centre for cycling holidays in the region because of it’s bicycle friendly roads and spectacular scenery.
A cycling route which is favoured by many tourists who are looking for something a little less sedate is that which takes you from Alcudia through Ermita de la Vitoria and on to la Atalaya de Alcudia. This is a distance (there and back) of 12 kilometres. This isn’t as gentle a cycle route as going along the cost to the east but the views that can be seen over the entire bay of Pollenca are very beautiful, and it’s not a super hard route either. A hermitage along the road has a wooden statue dating back to the 15th century which honours Victoria who is the patron saint of Alcudia, and at la Atalaya de Alcudia, there is a climb which can be done either by foot or by mountain bike, which takes you to a view point 444 metres above sea level, there is a watch tower on the peak overlooking the bay (where the best views are), which was built in 1599. Although only 12 kilometres long, this excursion can be a little difficult for beginners as there are several steep climbs.
Whether you are a regular cyclist or a casual cyclist, you can rent a bike here and enjoy many hours cycling the specially designated cycle tracks that lie next to many of the major roads. Bicycles for hire here are plentiful, and also reasonably cheap at around £4 per person for one day.
