Majorca is best known for it’s sun, sand and beautiful beach holidays, but for golf fans it’s quite a popular destination as the island has over 19 golf courses, and it’s a bit of a paradise for golf lovers as you can play here all year round. In fact Majorca has become a bit of a playground for golfing VIP’s and regular VIP guests include Jack Nicholson, Benjamin Toschak, and Michael Douglas.
Golf Alcanada just to the north of the Alcudia harbour is one of the newest golf courses in Majorca, and is about the nearest thing to a links course on the island. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 2003, and when designed, Trent Jones had as his philosophy ‘easy bogeys and difficult pars’. It’s not a course for beginners, but for any reasonably confident golfer, there is an appreciation of a course that needs a bit of skill and is a hard but fair 18 holes.
The course is a par 72 course and measures just over 6150 metres off the yellow tees. Green fees are around 90-105 Euros for a round, depending on the time of year.
As the only golf course on the island which is by the sea, this course has great views of the bay of Alcudia, and the island of Alcanada which it’s named for, as it skirts the Mediterranean. It’s set in an area of beauty and has been built in a setting where there are many wild birds and other wildlife to be enjoyed as you walk round the course.
Just a little way up the coast there is Golf Pollensa, this is a 9 hole golf course which was opened back in 1986 but which in 2000 went through a renovation programme bringing it up to a much higher standard. The course has views out towards the tramuntana mountains, olive groves, the bays of Pollenca and Alcudia and the s’Albufera reserve.
As well as the 9 hole course, Golf Pollensa has a driving range with putting green and pitching area, golf professional and special golf classes, a golf shop, bar and restaurant. Despite being only a 9 hole course, the design quality is excellent as it was renovated with the help of Mike Pinner a member of the Jack Nicklaus golf designing team, and has some very challenging holes.
