Porto Cristo is home to Majorca’s caves and is a fantastic day trip destination. Originally Porto Cristo was established as the medieval fishing port for Manacor and much later became one of the islands first beach spots, however this glory has since now faded.
On Sunday between 9am and 2pm Porto Cristo is home to a large market which sells the usual selection of souvenirs and food. The market is easy to find and takes place over the Passeig de la Sirena.
You really can’t visit Porto Cristo without visiting one of the underground cave complexes. Perhaps one of its most famous are the Coves del Drac (dragons caves) www.cuevasdeldrach.com which are a 15 minute walk from the town centre.
During the high season these caves are very popular and will develop long queues however once you are inside and the wait is over the reward is breathtaking. The caves are cleverly lite with dramatic bright lights that complement the beautiful underground chambers. The hour long otur of the caves climaxes with a visit to an underground lake where a classical concert is held.
Our advise is if you are going to the caves plan to go early in the day before it gets too busy.
The Coves del drac are not the only caves in Porto Cristo there are also Coves del Hams www.cuevas-hams.com which provides a similar and slightly less busy offing to the Caves del Drac
Very close to the Coves del Drac around 150 meters is the Aquari de Mallorca a modern aquarium which is great for taking children to.
