Alcuida is a beautiful place and lends itself well to those who want to take walks whilst on holiday. Whether it is a leisurely stroll with the kids, or a more involved hike or trek into the mountains this is a good area to base yourself in as there are many walks that can be taken in the area. Two of the most popular walks in the area are The Atalaya de Alcudia walk, and the walk round the Old town of Alcudia.
The Atalaya de Alcudia walk
This route has long been recognised as a good walk. Starting in the coastal area of S’Illot, you travel up through the trees to the Cami des Fontanelles which is then followed until you get to the wide ridge running up to the Atalaya. Walking up the ridge you get a fantastic clear view around you. The circuit continues by dropping down to the old hermitage which has recently been converted into a hotel, and then down through a valley full of pine trees, to Bon Aire.
Alcudia Old Town
The old town of Alcudia itself is worth walking round too, and one of the best ways to do this is to start at the south side and to walk around the walls which contain 26 towers. This way you will eventually come to the town’s bullring which is over 100 years old. You can also join one of the guided walks around the places of interest within the old town. These take place every week and begin at the town hall.
There are many small villages around the locality to explore as well, and as you walk around the countryside in this region the meadows full of wild flowers, and the mountain paths with their wonderful flora and fauna create a lovely backdrop to your walk. Many of the wild flowers here are easily recogniseable such as poppies and cornflowers which used to adorn the countryside of England but are sadly diminished from todays landscape.
The beach at Alcudia stretches out for about 10 kilometres and there are paths that lead you from beach to beach through the countryside. Many of them running along side the main highways so that there is little chance of getting lost. There are also many café’s and restaurants along the way where you can rest and enjoy a spot of lunch or a glass of local wine.
